We have all fallen prey to dandruff in our lives and were sometimes restrained from wearing our favorite dark clothes to a party, just because of those little white flakes. Sometimes, in a meeting or in a family gathering, we tend to embarrass ourselves by scratching our heads because of unbearable itchiness over the scalp, caused by dandruff.  But, not to worry anymore, we have compiled a list of 8 most effective home remedies for dandruff that can help you get rid of those little white flakes. What Is Dandruff?

Dandruff is a skin condition that causes inflammation of the scalp and is accompanied by itchiness of the skin, white flakes, and greasy patches. There are several causes for Dandruff, which may include not shampooing enough, dry skin, diet, sensitive to hair-care products, or overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus called Malassezia, which feeds on sebum on the scalp. Some skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema can also cause Dandruff. Although there are many over-the-counter products that treat Dandruff, natural home remedies for dandruff can be go-to and very effective.

Here Are A Few Home Remedies To Get Rid Of Dandruff Naturally 
1. Baking Soda

Baking soda is readily available and one of the most convenient home remedies for dandruff. It acts as a mild exfoliant to remove dead skin cells on the scalp, thus reducing scaling and itchiness. It also helps reduce the excess oil on the scalp and makes our scalp feel fresh.

One test-tube study which measured the antifungal effects of Baking soda found that it was able to effectively inhibit fungal growth in 79% of specimens just after seven days. Baking soda has properties to reduce the over-reactive fungi that cause dandruff.


Wet your hair, and massage baking soda into your hair and scalp. Allow it to settle for a minute or two, then wash it thoroughly with water. You could also mix Baking soda with shampoo and wash your hair with it.

2. Tea Tree Oil 

Tea tree is an essential oil that has powerful anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties in it, which helps to treat dandruff, and is considered one of the most effective natural treatments.. In the olden days, it was extensively used in the treatment of acne and psoriasis.

A 4-week study which examined the effects of tea tree oil on dandruff by treating 126 people daily with a shampoo containing either 5% tea tree oil or a placebo, found that tea tree oil reduced the severity of the symptoms by 41%, and improved greasiness and itchiness.


Add 6 drops of Tea tree oil to half a cup of essential oil, and massage on your scalp to fight dandruff. You can also add a few drops to your regular shampoo and massage your hair and scalp with it. Allow it to settle for about 5 minutes, and wash off with cold water.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is an effective home remedy for dandruff. It is full of antibacterial and antifungal properties, which help maintain scalp health. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) inhibits the growth of yeast by restoring the pH balance of the scalp, thus eliminating dandruff-causing fungi and effectively controls the problem. The anti-inflammatory properties of Apple cider vinegar soothe scalp irritation and inflammation and reduce itchiness.


Mix 2 cups of Apple cider vinegar with 3 cups of water and use this mixture to rinse your hair, post shampooing. Allow it to settle for 2-3 minutes, and wash it off.  You could also add a few tablespoons of Apple cider vinegar to your shampoo or combine it with essential oils and use them.

4. Coconut Oil And Lemon Juice 

Lemon juice is a rich source of citric acid, which helps fight dandruff from the roots of the hair follicles. Whereas Coconut oil moisturizes a dry scalp and helps tackle itchiness effectively. And also nourishes your hair, and boosts hair growth. This is one of the most common home remedies for dandruff, being used by Indians since decades and more.


Mix equal parts of Coconut Oil and Lemon Juice and massage on your scalp. Allow it to settle for 20 minutes before washing your hair. Follow this regularly for the best results.

5. Olive Oil And Vinegar

Olive oil is a natural conditioner and moisturizes your hair, which makes it an effective home remedy for dandruff. Olive oil helps prevent your scalp from flaking by moisturizing the dry patches on the scalp. Whereas the acetic properties of vinegar fight fungal infections and regulate blood circulation in the scalp.


Mix one tablespoon Olive oil with two tablespoons of White Vinegar in a bowl of water, and apply this mixture on your hair and massage the scalp for about 5 minutes, then wash it off with a sulfate-free anti-dandruff shampoo and apply a conditioner

6. Salt 

The abrasiveness of table salt works well for cleansing out dandruff flakes before you shampoo.  The Properties of Salt help absorb excess oil or sebum from your scalp, and when used in adequate amounts, absorb extra moisture and free your scalp from fungal infections.


Squeeze a bit of shampoo on your palm and mix a pinch of salt into it. Apply this mixture on your hair, and massage it onto your scalp gently. Allow it to settle for about 2 minutes and wash it off with lukewarm water

7. Fenugreek Seeds 

Fenugreek seeds are a great source of antifungal and antibacterial properties, which makes it one of the best home remedies for dandruff. Fenugreek seeds help get rid of dandruff and also provide your hair with protein, vitamin C, iron, potassium, nicotinic acid, and lecithin, which keep your hair strong and healthy.


Soak a half cup of Fenugreek seeds overnight, and in the morning grind these soaked seeds into a paste. Apply the paste to your hair and scalp thoroughly and let it sit for about 30 minutes, then wash it off with water using a mild shampoo and a conditioner.

8. Aloe Vera 

Aloe vera is a succulent plant known for its healing properties and is frequently used in many skin and hair products. It contains many bioactive compounds, such as amino acids and antioxidants, which helps fight dandruff.

A test-tube study found that Aloe Vera was very effective against several fungi species and helped control fungal infections that cause hair loss, and also reduce inflammation.


Slice the Aloe Vera and extract its gel from the plant, and apply the gel to your hair and scalp. Allow it to settle for about 20 minutes, and wash it off with mild anti-dandruff shampoo.
