Common Hair Problems And How To Deal With Them.

On average, a human loses 50-100 strands of hair every day. But that can vary with the season. For instance, many women experience greater hair fall problems during summers owing to high temperatures, humidity or dryness, and too many baths; while others may lose more hair during monsoon due to higher acidity in water.

So let us look at some of the commonest hair problems and the easiest way to deal with them, along with some natural home remedies.

Dandruff

There are competing studies, which have tried to prove that either dandruff worsens in summer or in winter. But for some, dandruff can be an all-year problem. Dandruff is a chronic condition that occurs when the scalp becomes dry or greasy and produces white flakes of dead skin. Dandruff can be caused by a combination of microbes, which naturally occurs on everyone’s scalp, natural oils (sebum) or a sensitive scalp. There are quite a few effective home remedies to get rid of dandruff naturally, and not let it be a problem anymore.

What To Do? 

Warm oil massage: Massage your scalp with warm oil. It will stimulate blood supply to the hair follicles and help loosen the dead skin flakes. Moreover, it nourishes your hair cuticles and protects your scalp against the harmful rays of the sun and prevents hair problems.

Go natural: While you might be tempted to take the easiest path – anti-dandruff shampoo – you could try some natural ingredients like amla, reetha, shikakai, egg white, neem paste, and curd mix to treat dandruff.

Split Ends

What To Do? 

Trim Them: Yes, you read it right. Trimming is one of the best ways to keep split ends at bay.

Banana: Mash one ripe banana, 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt and lemon juice. Mix all of them together to prepare a banana hair mask. Apply this on your hair and let it sit for an hour and then wash it off. Use this mask twice a week to control your hair fall problems.

Dry/Dull Hair 

A hair strand is made of protein and covered in tiny scales. These scales should ideally be soft and smooth. But lack of proper hair care can leave these scales dry and rough, which can make your hair look dull. Your hair is dry and dull because either you are using too many chemicals or are aggressive when it comes to detangling or exposing it to too much heat.

What To Do? 

Hair oil massage: Heat half a cup of oil (do not boil it), gently massage it into the hair and scalp. Then cover your hair with a warm towel and leave it for 30−45 minutes or overnight. Follow this up by washing your hair with a mild shampoo or reetha. This will keep your hair moisturized and nourished and give it a shine. Follow the same regime twice a week to control hair problems.

Early Greying 

Premature greying is defined as loss of hair pigment melanin, found in hair follicles, before the age of 30 in Asians. While premature greying has been primarily linked with genes and diseases, studies have shown that poor hair care regime can also set in the process early.

What To Do? 

Use onion juice. The antioxidant enzyme catalase found in onions can restore the natural color of your hair and the vitamin C and folic acid in it can delay the greying of hair. Catalase helps convert hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to water and oxygen. Research shows that grey hair is also born of hydrogen peroxide build-up.

Weak/Brittle Hair 

Are you one among those women who keep your hair short because you have weak and brittle hair? Do your hair fall problems double or treble the moment you grow your hair longer or try some fancy hairstyle? Often chemical relaxers and hair dyes, extreme heat, harsh chemical hair products, hot water, excessive washing, genetics and hormones, and friction can weaken hair roots leading to hair loss.

Try egg treatment— beat one or two eggs and apply it to your scalp and hair. Leave the egg on the scalp for about 30 minutes and wash the hair with cold water. Eggs are high in protein, which is essential for the body to build strong, thick hair. When used regularly, eggs can help strengthen hair roots and control hair fall.

Smelly Hair 

Common in summers or among those with an oily scalp, smelly hair can be very embarrassing. Besides under-washing and over-washing, stress and hormonal imbalances can leave your scalp stinky.

What To Do? 

Use Tomatoes: Tomatoes contain antibacterial properties that can help in getting rid of scalp and hair odor. Take one big tomato and squeeze the pulp out. Apply the pulp to your scalp directly. Leave it on your scalp for 20-30 minutes before rinsing it off. Or wash your hair with a mild, herbal or ayurvedic shampoo. Apply a light jasmine oil when the hair is damp. This will leave your hair smelling nice.
